The counting of wolves by companies entrusted with tenders by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Slovak Republic (ŠOP) is based on genetic analysis of feces. If you manage to find feces from at least 0.5% of the total wolf population, then you are good. Therefore, the wolf population figures from ŠOP are unrealistically low. Much more realistic figures are from the National Forest Centre (NLC), which in 2019 estimated the number of wolves at 2,786 individuals.
A hunter responded to the FB status of MEP Martin Hojsík, who defended the zero quota based on emotional arguments, as follows: “Let them show the public, the children, how wolves eat a doe, how she tries to get on her feet and they are already tearing her guts out. How they make a living can out of a deer. They eat half of its ass and kill it only on the third day. That is the reality in nature. Show that to the public too. Not just little wolf cubs at the den.” … Hunters also argue that an overpopulated wolf population stresses and disperses game, which flees from the presence of the wolf. Something about the history of the protection of the capercaillie and the wolf
Environmental problems with the capercaillie, which was on the verge of extinction, were also addressed during socialism. The protection of the capercaillie was handled radically: by significantly reducing the number of predators, including wolves. You won’t believe it, it seems crazy today, but in the past, the reward for hunting a wolf was 2000 Kčs, which corresponded to approximately a monthly salary, maybe even more. Later, the reward dropped to 1000 Kčs. A very strong financial motivation for hunting. Many conservation activists’ hearts would break from such drastic measures for capercaillie protection. And what were the results of these measures? The wolf did not become extinct, and the capercaillie population increased so much that it became game. The capercaillie population increased despite the fact that 90% of national park territories were commercial forests and were managed by clear-cutting, which is now completely banned in Slovakia. Martin Mikuláš (OZ Prales) also talks about the need for clearings for capercaillie, similar to those created by clear-cutting, in “Capercaillie-friendly forest management 2012”.
By the way, it’s interesting that in Austria the population of the capercaillie is so good that they hunt up to 290 specimens per year. It’s interesting that in Austria they don’t have predators and in the Alps, they mostly use clear-cutting methods.
I admit that my jaw dropped when I heard that in the past there was a reward of CZK 2,000 for hunting a wolf. I had to verify this information from several sources and indeed this information was confirmed to me.
