If Russian politicians wanted to, they would have ended the war in Ukraine a long time ago – it is within their full competence. But Putin cannot afford that, because people would rebel against him and his popularity would radically decline – they would not elect him president in the future. Putin only does what is popular.

This is how politicians increase their popularity among voters. This is how Russian politicians distract attention from their own internal economic problems, which are really serious in Russia.
The specific mentality of Russians also includes the fact that the tyrant and ruler of fear, Stalin, still has quite a few devoted admirers and defenders in Russia, who are clear deniers of Stalin's Holocaust. It is very sad when they still support Stalin in their thoughts in this way – to support crimes in the past in thought means to draw upon oneself equally bad karma as if one were acting and co-participating in the commission of crimes in reality in the present.
Of course, not all Russians can be lumped together: even among them, there are many who do not suffer from an inferiority complex, who have seen through the Kremlin's propaganda and resolutely reject the propaganda of "patriotism" behind which lies the cultivation of superiority and dominance over the West. Conflict Resolution in Europe and Russia
While the propaganda of alternative media talks about the corrupt, godless, immoral West (Western Europe) and Russia as a Christian, morally-based country, the opposite is true. Only those people who have never been to Russia idealize and praise Russia. One of my friends, who has traveled a lot in his life, lived in Russia for 2 years. He had no other negative experiences with any other nation than with the Russians. While in Europe, an exchange of views is resolved at a verbal level, in Russia, even if two people argue, it is resolved by a fight – and not just any fight, but a very harsh and crude fight, hard fists are aimed at the head and the fight always ends with one of the fighters losing consciousness. A concussion and head injury is a very dangerous thing from a medical point of view, which without medical care can end in death or lifelong consequences. They haven't figured that out in Russia yet.
Russians very often have serious conflicts among themselves, even over minor trivialities, especially when they are under the influence of alcohol, which they love so much.
There is no more moralizing and talking about Russia as a symbol of good and morality. Even in Muslim countries, people have more respect for each other than in Russia.
